Abstract

Use of meta-heuristic algorithms in analysis of structures is much more recent than their use in design of structures. Effectively, while design optimization makes use of genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, swarm optimization, etc. since about half a century with an increasing interest, these techniques are being used in structural analysis since a decade only. Total Potential Optimization using Meta-heuristic Algorithms (TPO/MA), though being an emerging method at the moment, has proved to be very efficient in solving nonlinear problems, involving both material and geometric nonlinearities. The capabilities of the method in treating under-constrained problems and problems with non-unique solutions are much more advanced than the classical methods including the well-known Finite Element Method. © 2017 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

  • Analysis of trusses by total potential optimization method coupled with harmony search

    Toklu Y.C.; Bekdaş G.; Temur R. (Techno Press, 2013)
Current methods of analysis of trusses depend on matrix formulations based on equilibrium equations which are in fact derived from energy principles, and compatibility conditions. Recently it has been shown that the minimum ...

Structural analysis problems can be formulized as either root finding problems, or optimization problems. The general practice is to choose the first option directly or to convert the second option again to a root finding ...
  • Optimum design of braced steel frames via teaching learning based optimization

    Artar M. (Techno Press, 2016)
In this study, optimum structural designs of braced (non-swaying) planar steel frames are investigated by using one of the recent meta-heuristic search techniques, teaching-learning based optimization. Optimum design ...
