Öğe Breaking the silence on late-life depression: uncovering the drivers of help-seeking in Türkiye's ageing population(Bmc, 2025) Ercan, Ugur; Apaydin, Emine; Alkan, OmerBackgroundDue to the prevalence of physical health issues among older adults, depression remains a significant health concern, which is often overlooked. Understanding the factors influencing the likelihood of seeking psychological support plays an important role in effectively managing depression in later life, where psychological support has a crucial role. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the likelihood of receiving psychological support among individuals aged 60 years and older experiencing depression in T & uuml;rkiye.MethodsThis study used microdata from the T & uuml;rkiye Health Surveys conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Gompit, binary logistic regression, and CHAID analyses were used to identify variables associated with psychological support-seeking behavior among older adults with depression.ResultsThe analysis revealed that general health status, illness status, gender, education level, and difficulty in healthcare payment significantly influenced the likelihood of receiving psychological support among older adults with depression.ConclusionThe results achieved in this study indicate that among older adults experiencing depression, women, those with higher educational levels, and those with existing illnesses are more likely to seek psychological support. Based on these results, it is recommended to develop educational programs to raise societal awareness about the importance of psychological support and to inform health policies accordingly.Öğe Prevalence and predictors of psychological assistance services for older individuals in Turkish society(Frontiers Media Sa, 2023) Coskun, Huseyin; Yildiz, Ibrahim; Alkan, OmerBackground/aimDue to the high contribution of psychological problems to the decline in the comfortable lifestyle of the older individuals, determining the factors that affect individuals' receiving psychological services and searching for solutions based on these factors is one of the primary concerns of national and international decision-makers. This study aimed to identify the factors that affect older individuals' access to psychological assistance services in Turkey. MethodsIn this study, the Turkish Health Research micro dataset, which was conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) in 2016 and 2019, was employed. In this dataset, the data of 7,252 older individuals were analyzed. Using binary logistic analysis, the factors that are effective for obtaining psychological assistance for the older individuals were identified. ResultsAccording to the results of the analysis, factors such as gender, education, general health status, disease status, payment of health expenditures, and body mass index affected older individuals who received psychological assistance. ConclusionIn recent years, there has been a rise in the availability of psychological assistance services for the older individuals. By identifying factors that increase the likelihood of receiving psychological assistance services, this study is expected to contribute to the creation and regulation of psychological assistance services to prevent possible psychological problems that may occur in old age, minimize the problems experienced by individuals, and promote a more comfortable lifestyle.
