Breaking the silence on late-life depression: uncovering the drivers of help-seeking in Türkiye's ageing population
(Bmc, 2025) Ercan, Ugur; Apaydin, Emine; Alkan, Omer
BackgroundDue to the prevalence of physical health issues among older adults, depression remains a significant health concern, which is often overlooked. Understanding the factors influencing the likelihood of seeking psychological support plays an important role in effectively managing depression in later life, where psychological support has a crucial role. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the likelihood of receiving psychological support among individuals aged 60 years and older experiencing depression in T & uuml;rkiye.MethodsThis study used microdata from the T & uuml;rkiye Health Surveys conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Gompit, binary logistic regression, and CHAID analyses were used to identify variables associated with psychological support-seeking behavior among older adults with depression.ResultsThe analysis revealed that general health status, illness status, gender, education level, and difficulty in healthcare payment significantly influenced the likelihood of receiving psychological support among older adults with depression.ConclusionThe results achieved in this study indicate that among older adults experiencing depression, women, those with higher educational levels, and those with existing illnesses are more likely to seek psychological support. Based on these results, it is recommended to develop educational programs to raise societal awareness about the importance of psychological support and to inform health policies accordingly.

Effect of geriatric massage in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled trial
(Elsevier, 2025) Apaydin, Emine; Hintistan, Sevilay
Objective: This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of geriatric massage on diabetes-related symptoms and blood parameters in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The study included 59 participants (29 in the geriatric massage group and 30 in the control group). Methods: Data were collected using the Older Adults Information Form, the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist, and the Blood Parameters Monitoring Form. Participants in the intervention group received 30-minute geriatric massage sessions twice weekly for 12 weeks. Statistical analyses included the Shapiro-Wilk test, Mann-Whitney U test, ANOVA, Friedman test, Wilcoxon test, Chi-square test, Fisher-Freeman-Halton test, Greenhouse-Geisser correction, Bonferroni adjustment, and paired and independent t-tests. Results: Compared with the control group, participants receiving geriatric massage showed a significant reduction in diabetes symptoms (p < 0.001), an increase in HDL cholesterol levels, and decreases in other blood parameters (p < 0.05). Discussion: Geriatric massage may help reduce diabetes symptoms and improve selected blood parameters in older adults with type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome index measurement tool (MSI): scale development, reliability and validity study
(Bmc, 2025) Akeren, Zahide; Apaydin, Emine
Aim Identifying the risks of metabolic syndrome (MetS) can lead to early targeted interventions and thus contribute to improved quality of life by reducing the risk of developing MetS, diabetes or heart disease in the future. We aimed to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to measure the MetS risk of the population. Materials and methods In the methodological study, an item pool was created by reviewing the literature. Pre-application was performed after the weighting of the items whose content validity was ensured by taking expert opinions. Data were collected from 43 patients with MetS from a state hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health and 405 individuals without MetS from the community, from a total of 448 individuals using the Individual Information Form, Finnish Diabetes Risk Scale (FINDRISC) and Metabolic Syndrome Index (MSI). The data obtained were evaluated using SPSS 22.0 and MedCalc 19.1 statistical programmes. Scale discrimination was analyzed by independent samples t-test between the upper and lower 27% groups. The cut-off point of the scale score in predicting the diagnosis of MetS was tested by ROC analysis. Correlation analysis was performed with the parallel form for criterion validity. Results As a result of the ROC analysis, a perfectly compatible scale with a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 85.43% and a cut-off score of 48 was obtained. When the correlation analyses between MSI and FINDRISC scores were examined for criterion validity, a positive moderate (r = 0.632, p < 0.001) correlation was found between FINDRISC and MSI. When the discrimination of the scale was analysed, it was found that there was a significant difference between the lower 27% and upper 27% groups (p < 0.05) and it was revealed that the MSI made sensitive measurements to discriminate. Conclusions The MSI scale is a valid and reliable tool for early detection of MetS risk.
