An Investigation of Classroom Teachers' Disaster Literacy Levels and Preparedness for Disasters

This study was conducted to determine the current disaster literacy levels of classroom teachers and to reveal the level of preparedness of classroom teachers against disasters. The study group of the research consists of 250 classroom teachers working in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ in the 2023-2024 academic year by using simple random sampling method. For this purpose, exploratory sequential design, one of the mixed research designs, was used. The quantitative data of the study were collected with the Disaster Literacy Scale (AFOY) and the variables of gender, professional seniority and education level were examined using the SPSS 22.0 package program. In these examinations, no statistically significant difference was found for the gender and education level variables of disaster literacy, but a statistically significant difference was found in the professional seniority variable in the improvement and intervention sub-dimensions. Qualitative findings of the study were collected through interview questions prepared by the researcher and analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the qualitative data, teachers' readiness for natural disasters was revealed, their opinions on disaster outcomes were taken and the teaching methods and techniques they used to transfer disaster outcomes were examined.
