Attitudes of physical education teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students: a phenomenological study
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Ogur, Yekta Goksel; Yarimkaya, Erkan; Aydemir, Ugur; Kul, Murat
With the increasing presence of autistic students in inclusive schools, understanding the attitudes of physical education (PE) teachers towards teaching these students has become important. The current study aimed to examine the attitudes of PE teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students using the theory of planned behavior. The participants of this phenomenological-qualitative study were 16 PE teachers who participated in one-on-one semi-structured telephone interviews. The interviews were transcribed for analysis and later analyzed using thematic line-by-line analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of PE teachers in inclusive schools had negative attitudes towards teaching autistic students. Barriers and challenges during teaching autistic students were more dominant for PE teachers than facilitators. The results highlighted the importance of addressing the barriers and challenges that limit the quality of PE teachers' teaching experiences with autistic students as a way to improve PE teachers' attitudes and indicated the need to establish an adapted PE teacher definition, especially in countries such as T & uuml;rkiye.

ChatGPT-Delivered Physical Activity Intervention for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pre-Post Feasibility Study
(Jmir Publications, Inc, 2025) Aydemir, Ugur
Background: The use of digital technologies, such as mobile apps, Zoom (Zoom Communications), virtual reality, and video games, to promote physical activity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing. However, there are no studies using ChatGPT (OpenAI), a popular tool in recent years, for promoting physical activity in children with ASD. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and potential effectiveness of ChatGPT-delivered physical activity interventions in children with ASD. Methods: A total of 26 families (parent-child dyads) participated in the study. Families were randomly assigned to an application group (n=13) and a control group (n=13). In the application group, parents implemented physical activities recommended by ChatGPT for their children with ASD. Data were collected using the Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (LTEQ) and a feasibility questionnaire. Results: Parents reported that ChatGPT-delivered physical activities were a feasible intervention to increase physical activity levels in children with ASD. They also found the activity content suggested by ChatGPT to be interesting and useful. LTEQ measurements corroborated these findings, showing a significant increase in the physical activity levels of children in the intervention group after the intervention. Conclusions: The results suggest that ChatGPT-delivered physical activities could be a promising intervention to enhance physical activity in children with ASD. Further investigation is warranted. Social Media-based Interventions to Promote Physical Activity in People with Disabilities: A Systematic Review
(Sage Publications Inc, 2026) Yarimkaya, Erkan; Ogur, Yekta Goksel; Aydemir, Ugur
Purpose: This systematic review summarized and evaluated 13 studies investigating the effectiveness of social media-based interventions to promote physical activity (PA) among people with disabilities (PWD). Methods: Findings regarding study, participant and intervention characteristics, and PA outcomes were extracted. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. Results: Findings regarding the effectiveness of social media-based interventions to promote PA among PWD varied, and provide the support for social media-based PA intervention benefits for people with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, physical disability, and cancer patient; however, there was no support for its use in people with developmental coordination disorder. Conclusion: Social media-based interventions may have the potential to promote PA among PWD. However, to fully leverage this potential, further research is needed. This review provides valuable insights for researchers, parents, and educators seeking to promote PA among PWD.
