Experiences of Nurse Managers in the 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkey Earthquakes: A Qualitative Study
(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2025) Kaba, Nagihan Koroglu; Bal, Betul; Ozturk, Havva
BACKGROUND:Nurse managers play a critical role in disaster response and management; yet research on their experiences in earthquakes remains limited.OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in the Kahramanmaras, Turkey, earthquakes.METHODS:A phenomenological approach was used to guide this study, exploring the lived experiences of nurse managers who worked during the 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Turkey. Purposive sampling identified participants, and data were collected 2-3 months postearthquake, from April to May 2023, via semi-structured interviews conducted via social media. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the interview data.RESULTS:A total of 11 nurse managers were interviewed for the study. Fifty-five percent were between the ages of 35 and 44, 64% were female and had a bachelor's degree. Five themes emerged from the data: being unprepared (predisaster phase), emotional difficulties, communication and coordination issues, resource shortages (disaster event phase), and evaluation and professional satisfaction (postdisaster phase).CONCLUSION:The study found that most nurse managers reported feeling unprepared for the earthquake despite institutional disaster management practices. They struggled with managing their emotions, resource shortages, and communication-coordination issues. These experiences underscore the need for enhanced disaster training and preparedness for nurses. Collaboration among international health organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and governments is essential to develop disaster management plans to optimize nurses as early responders.

The effect of laughter yoga on disease acceptance, treatment adherence and comfort in hemodialysis patients: A randomized controlled study
(Elsevier Science Inc, 2025) Bal, Betul; Koroglu-Kaba, Nagihan; Ozturk, Havva; Kurt, Yeter; Ozsaban, Aysel
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of laughter yoga on hemodialysis patients' disease acceptance, treatment adherence and comfort levels. This randomized controlled study was conducted with 42 patients (experimental group=21, control group=21) who were treated in the hemodialysis unit. Hemodialysis patients in the experimental group received 12 sessions of laughter yoga for four weeks, three days a week. Data were collected using Patient Information Form, Disease Acceptance Scale, End-Stage Renal Disease Adherence Questionnaire, and Hemodialysis Comfort Scale. A significant difference was found between the disease acceptance scale (t(41) = 4.39, p < 0.001, d = 1.364), end-stage renal failure adaptation scale (t(41) = 2.69, p = 0.010, d = 0.830) and hemodialysis comfort scale (t(41) = 5.58, p = 0.010, d = 1.710) of hemodialysis patients who underwent laughter yoga. In addition for the Disease Acceptance Scale, the SD of the pre-test scores was 7.51. Accordingly, the MCID thresholds were calculated as 3.75 (0.5 SD), 3.11 (1 SEM), and 6.09 (1.96 SEM). For the End-Stage Renal Disease Adherence Questionnaire, the SD was 178.79, and the MCID was calculated as 89.40 (0.5 SD), 63.47 (1 SEM), and 124.39 (1.96 SEM). For the Hemodialysis Comfort Scale, the SD was 6.43, resulting in MCID estimates of 3.21 (0.5 SD), 2.01 (1 SEM), and 3.94 (1.96 SEM). Laughter yoga practiced during hemodialysis increased acceptance of the disease, adherence to treatment, and comfort (p < 0.05). In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found in the control group (p > 0.05). Increasing hemodialysis patients' acceptance of the disease, adherence to treatment, and comfort levels ensure the successful continuation of the disease management process. The practice of laughter yoga in clinics during hemodialysis sessions is recommended to increase disease acceptance, adherence to treatment and comfort levels.

The Effect of Mindfulness Practices on Positive Thinking and Stress Coping Behaviors of Earthquake Survivor Nursing Students: A Nonrandomized Controlled Study
(Sage Publications Inc, 2025) Bal, Betul; Kaba, Nagihan Koroglu
Purpose: This study was conducted to reveal the effect of mindfulness practices on nursing students' stress-coping behaviors and positive thinking skills. Method: This was a two-group parallel nonrandomized study. Mindfulness practices were applied to the students in the experimental group. Data were collected using research tools (Personal Information Form, Positive Thinking Skills Scale, and Stress Coping Behaviors Scale for Nursing Students) as pre- and posttests. Findings: After the intervention, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the posttest scores of positive thinking skills (t = 0.624; p = .541) and stress coping behaviors of staying optimistic (t = -0.957; p = .345), transfer (t = -2.028; p = .050), problem-solving (t = -0.663; p = .512), and avoidance (U = 132; p = .230). Conclusions: Mindfulness practices are ineffective in improving earthquake survivor nursing students' coping behaviors and positive thinking skills.

The Turkish Validity and Reliability of Clinical Reasoning Scale for Nursing Students: A Methodological Study
(Ataturk Univ, 2024) Bal, Betul; Kaba, Nagihan Koroglu; Ozturk, Havva
Objective: The aim of the study was to adapt the Clinical Reasoning Scale into Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability in nursing students. Methods: The study, which is methodological research, was conducted with 271 nursing students at a university in the Central Anatolia Region. The data were collected with the Personal Information Form and the 'Clinical Reasoning Scale' in its draft form. After the language and content validity of the scale, its construct validity was ensured by confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach Alpha, item -total correlations, divergent and test -retest methods were used for the reliability of the scale. Results: The fit indices of the Clinical Reasoning Scale for its 4 sub -dimensions, namely awareness of clinical clues, verification of clinical problems, identification and implementation of actions, evaluation and reflection, and a total of 16 items, are above 0.90, and according to these results, the structure of the scale is accepted as valid. The average explained variance of the subdimensions is between 0.476-0.579, and the composite reliability is between 0.778-0.854. The total Cronbach Alpha of the scale is 0.92. There is a significant difference between the top 27% and the bottom 27% groups of the scale and the test -retest correlation coefficient is 0.902. Conclusion: It has been determined that the Clinical Reasoning Scale is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to determine the level of clinical reasoning in nursing students with 16 items and 4 sub-dimensions.
