Öğe Exploring Problem Areas of Elderly Patients with Diabetes and the Support Provided by Their Family(Marmara Univ, Inst Health Sciences, 2022) Dastan, Buket; Hintistan, SevilayObjective: Diabetes increases problems in emotional areas particularly among the elderly patients by aggravating negative emotions such as loss, anxiety and fear and makes these patients need higher level of family support. This study aims at exploring problematic areas of the elderly diabetic patients and their family support levels. Methods: The data of this descriptive study were collected by the researcher by conducting a face to face interview with 218 elderly diabetic patients who presented to Endocrine Polyclinics of State Hospital between October 2015 and October 2016. To collect the data, Patient Information Form, Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale (PAID) and Hensarling's Diabetes Family Support Scale (HDFSS) were used. Results: Although problem areas among the patients were found to be fewer than expected; it was found that there were significant differences between problem areas and sex, diabetes time, treatment type, length of oral antidiabetic medicine use and insulin use, development of diabetes-related complication and hospitalization due to these complications in the recent year (p<0.05). Besides, the family support levels of the elderly patients were below the moderate level, and the number of individuals the patients live together with, the number of people receiving support due to diabetes and the number of people who received support from their spouses because of diabetes was a significant variable that affected HDFSS total score and the subscale scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: For a better diabetes management, sex and diabetes related variables should be taken into consideration while delivering health services and increasing family support levels can make positive contributions to the mood of the elderly patients.Öğe The impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients: A quasi-experimental study(Mosby-Elsevier, 2024) Dastan, Buket; Kulaka, NursenAim: This study aimed to determine the impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients. Method: The data of the study, which used a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design without a control group, was collected between July 1, 2023, - January 30, 2024. Data collection involved the use of a Personal Information Form, the Religious Coping Scale, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the Visual Analog Scale. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in psychological well-being and positive religious coping after surgical intervention compared to presurgical levels (p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that male gender, younger age, enhanced psychological well-being, and positive religious coping were identified as factors contributing to a reduction in postsurgical pain levels. Conclusion: The study's results indicate that surgical intervention serves as a significant variable influencing psychological well-being and religious coping among older adult patients. The population of the descriptive study consisted of individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus residing in Gümüşhane and Bayburt provinces. The sample size was determined with the G*Power 3.1.6.9 program. A total of 315 individuals were reached in the study using a snowball sampling method. Data were collected by “Google Form” us- ing “Personal Information Form” and “Diabetes Medication Self-Efficacy Scale”. In the analysis of the data, independent groups t-test, one-way ANOVA test and Pearson product moments correlation test were used. The average age of the individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus participating in the study was 52.29±14.74 years, the duration of diabetes disease was 9.23±6.25 years, and 81% of them were men. The total average score of the participants from the “Diabetes Medication Self-Efficacy Scale\" was determined as 38.70±12.36 points. It was found that the average total score of the” Diabetes Medication Self-Efficacy Scale\" was higher for women than men, singles than married. Again, the total scale score averages were statistically different according to the occupational group (p<0.001). In addition, the average total score of the “Diabetes Drug Use Self-Efficacy Scale” was found to be higher for individuals who received training on diabetes drug use compared to individuals who did not receive it. It was found that the average scores of the participants from the \"Diabetes Medication Self-Efficacy Scale\" and its sub-dimensions were moderate. In order to increase the diabetes drug use self-efficacy levels of participants diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, training on the use of diabetes drugs can be expanded.Öğe The willingness of elderly care program students to care for older adults and the associated factors: a multi-centered research(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2023) Okur, Elif; Akbal, Yagmur; Senturk, Aysun Yagci; Dastan, Buket; Kuralay, CigdemProspective technicians for elderly care are indispensable elements that should be included in the relevant system to meet the ever-increasing care needs of the aging world population and increase the quality of care. This research was conducted to evaluate the attitudes of students in the elderly care program at the associate degree toward the older adults and their willingness to provide care. The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study comprised 525 volunteer students in elderly care programs in five vocational schools of higher education located in northeastern Turkey between June 2020 and September 2020. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage, independent t-test, and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The study showed that the mean age of the students involved in the study was 20.3 +/- 1.6. 77.7% of them were female, and 61.9% were in the first grade. Students' willingness to care for older adults was found to be at a moderate level (36.3 +/- 6.0). The students had a negative attitude (137.4 +/- 26.7) about aging and elderliness. The willingness of male students to care for older adults was significantly higher (p < .05). Those who did not live with an older adult in the same house before had a more negative attitude toward them (p < .05). To get rid of personal and social stereotypes and have a positive attitude toward older adults, students should be provided to work in clinical environments that will allow them to spend more time with them.
