Evaluation Of Theses On Media Literacy In Terms Of Purpose, Methods And Results

Reading, utilizing, and producing media content have emerged as essential competencies in contemporary society. Understanding how media literacy is addressed in academic literature contributes significantly to the field. This study aims to examine graduate theses on media literacy and education in Turkey regarding their purposes, methodologies, and findings. The research employs meta-synthesis methodology. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to determine studies for analysis, utilizing the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) National Thesis Database. A total of 71 accessible theses (53 master's and 18 doctoral dissertations spanning 2007-2021) were examined. Selected theses were analyzed using thematic synthesis methodology. Analysis revealed that level determination and relationship investigations constitute the most frequently studied objectives. Quantitative research methods were predominantly employed, with secondary school students and pre-service teachers representing the most commonly studied sample groups. The most frequently utilized data collection instruments were scales and interview techniques. The most commonly examined variables included gender, academic department, grade level, parental education status, family income level, number of siblings, and professional experience.
