Investigation of Fly Ash Originated Heavy Metal Distribution in the Close Surroundings of Afşin Elbistan-A Thermal Power Plant with Gaussian Semivariogram Model
(Bayburt University, 2022) Türkmenoğlu, Mehmet; Mert, Bayram Ali; Anıl, Mesut
Fly ash coming out of the chimneys of Afşin Elbistan-A Thermal Power Plant disperses with the effect of the wind and then settles on the soil. In this study, the relationship between heavy metal pollution on the soils in the vicinity of the power plant and the prevailing wind directions and blowing numbers was investigated with the Gaussian Semivariogram Model. Soil samples were taken from the close vicinity of the thermal power plant and analyzed for eight heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co and Mn). Analysis results of soil samples; It was higher than the 100 mg/kg limit value given for chromium in the Soil Pollution Control Regulation No. 25831 dated 31.05.2005, and the 75 mg/kg limit value given for nickel. When the Gaussian distribution graphs obtained according to the Dominant Wind Direction and Blowing Numbers of the heavy metal contents determined in the soil samples around Afşin Elbistan A Thermal Power Plant are examined; Lead (14.7 to 35.7 mg/kg), cadmium (0.99 to 2.29 mg/kg), and copper (30.6 to 38.8 mg/kg) are distributed along the southwest-northeast axis. Chromium (199 to 256 mg/kg), nickel (144 to 206 mg/kg), zinc (54.6 to 70.9 mg/kg), cobalt (30.7 to 41.3 mg/kg) ) and manganese (between 725 and 925 mg/kg) are distributed along the northwest-southeast axis. These results show that after the fly ash leaves the chimney, it disperses around the power plant according to the direction and speed of the wind and collapses in the vicinity of the power plant. It can be said that the increase in heavy metals in the soils in the vicinity of the thermal power plant is due to the fly ash coming out of the power plant chimneys. The heavy metal concentrations observed decrease with distance from the plant.
