Examining general trends in studies conducted on disaster ıssues in the context of social studies education

Social studies stands out as a field closely associated with disaster education. The purpose of this study is to explore the general trends in theses and research papers focused on disaster topics in the field of social studies education between 2016 and the first quarter of 2025. The examination of 80 studies indicated that, while interest in disaster-related topics has surged in recent years, most research has been limited to identifying current situations through methods such as document analysis, scanning techniques, or phenomenological research. Furthermore, it was found that disasters were mostly discussed in a general sense or with an emphasis on earthquakes, and that research in languages other than Turkish was limited. At this point, it is recommended to conduct mixed-method, design-based, and action research that introduce new products, processes, and ideas, and evaluate their impacts through practical applications, either from stakeholders' perspectives or using experimental methods. Moreover, it is recommended that greater attention be given to other disasters that have significant negative impacts in Türkiye such as forest fires, landslides, and droughts, and that more publications be produced in languages other than Turkish to enhance the broader impact.
