Critical Reading Based Literary Criticism Rubric Development

In this study, an analytical literary criticism rubric based on Bloom's taxonomy, literary theories and critical thinking standards was developed. The aim of the analytical rubric is to score sentence and paragraph-level answers regarding the chapters/extracts of novels or novellas. This rubric was prepared in a 4-point Likert scale type, and has five items: comprehension, reception, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The comprehension item is about understanding the surface structure of the story, the reception item is about establishing interaction between the story and the reader, the analysis and synthesis items are about understanding the deep structure of the story, and the evaluation item is about judging the story. The content validity rate for the items of the rubric and the content validity index for the entire rubric were calculated as 1.00. The inter-rater correlation coefficient for the items and the entire rubric was calculated as r>.79 (lowest value), and the single-rater correlation coefficient was calculated as r>.88 (lowest value). The rubric is valid and reliable on the grounds that the content validity ratio and content validity index are above the minimum value, and the intra class correlation coefficient indicates perfect agreement.
