Öğe Hybrid tabu search algorithm for weight optimization of planar steel frames(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021) Tayfur, Bilal; Yilmaz, Hamid; Daloglu, Ayse T.In this study, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called Hybrid Tabu Search (HTS) is proposed for the weight optimization of planar steel structures. The effectiveness of HTS lies in improving the initial conditions of a tabu search algorithm with a greedy search algorithm and a swap operator used in the phase of section selection. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and validated on three different benchmark examples. C# software is developed to perform the structural analyses. Numerical results obtained by using HTS showed that the proposed method achieved significantly lighter frame weights in most of the benchmark examples. When the method was examined in terms of computational efficiency, HTS was at a level that can compete with other algorithms examined within this study, although it did not provide a significant advantage.Öğe A mathematical model and tabu search algorithm for multi-manned assembly line balancing problems with assignment restrictions(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Yilmaz, Hamid; Yilmaz, MustafaA multi-manned assembly line is a set of workstations where task operations can be performed on multiple sides of the line. Such assembly lines are important for large products, such as buses, cars and trucks. In this study, a mathematical model for multi-manned assembly lines with assignment restrictions is proposed. The purpose of the mathematical model is to minimize the total number of workers and open multi-manned workstations along the line for a given cycle time simultaneously under various assignment restrictions. The model provides a more realistic situation for multi-manned assembly line problems. The tabu search algorithm (TSA) is also used to solve the problem. The performances of both methods on well-known data-set problems are analysed. Based on the computational experiments, the performance of the proposed TSA is compared with the mathematical model solutions on various problem instances. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed TSA.Öğe Modeling and solving assembly line worker assignment and balancing problem with sequence-dependent setup times(Springer, 2021) Yilmaz, HamidAssembly lines appear with various differentiations in order to better include the disabled in the labor market and to increase production efficiency. In this way, the optimal workforce assignment problem that emerges heterogeneously is called assembly line worker assignment and balancing problem (ALWABP). This paper addresses the ALWABP where the simple version is enriched by considering sequence-dependent setup times between tasks. A mixed integer linear programming model is presented, and a simulated annealing algorithm is developed such as an NP-hard problem. In order to test the proposed solutions, 640 benchmark problems in the literature were combined and used. The solutions obtained through using the proposed algorithm are compared with the mixed integer programming model on the small-size test problems. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more effective and robust for a large set of benchmark problems.Öğe A visual application for teaching pipe flow optimization in engineering curricula(Wiley, 2020) Turkkan, Yusuf Alptekin; Turkkan, Gokcen Eryilmaz; Yilmaz, HamidThe main purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of programming in the learning and understanding of water distribution networks. This paper presents the implementation of a programming language C# for applications for teaching water distribution networks calculations at both undergraduate and graduate levels. A user's guide is also prepared for the software which includes the theory of hydraulic and optimization calculations. There are many ways to design water distribution networks. Hardy Cross method is very often used for optimization of networks. Thus, Hardy Cross optimization method was preferred in this study. It is a perfect study to implement as an educational tool at undergraduate and graduate levels of education.
